György Kurtág’s Kafka-Fragmente
Keren Motseri (soprano(
Joe Puglia (violin)

You listen on the edge of your seat. The concerts of soprano Keren Motseri and violinist Joe Puglia are always inspiring. On stage they challenge each other to find drama in their dialogues, but also the subtlest nuances. A long-cherished wish comes true: they perform György Kurtág's ‘Kafka Fragments’. A masterpiece by the now 98-year-old Hungarian composer and an iconic cylce of the 20th century. The two musicians travelled to Budapest to spend several days working on the piece with the perfectionist Kurtág. The ‘Kafka Fragment’s is a journey into Kafka’s world. The music demands the utmost from the musicians: extroverted theatre, but also heartfelt introspection.

Kurtág’s Kafka-Fragmente – Joe Puglia & Keren Motseri

De Link Tilburg

*Joseph Puglia (violin)*

The Kafka Fragments of the Hungarian composer György Kurtág, a fellow student of György Ligeti at the Liszt Academy in Budapest, are among his best-known and most performed works. Kurtág studied in Paris in 1957-58 with Olivier Messiaen and Darius Milhaud and came into contact with the Western avant-garde. There he also discovered Kafka's works and over the next decades collected fragments of his diary, letters and a posthumously discovered text. That collection became the basis for an exceptionally unconventional and expressive song cycle for soprano and violin.

This work, lasting more than an hour, consists of four sections with 40 miniatures that together form a mosaic of quotes from Kafka's work. The composition is multi-interpretable at every level – as a song cycle, a personal diary, a duet for violin and soprano, a secular passion in miniature form or simply a series of sound experiences, but above all as an interpretation of the existential and elusive Kafkaesque experience of the absurdity of our existence.

Complete versions of this masterpiece are rare. At this concert you will hear the complete version.

The beating heart of Gaudeamus is the Gaudeamus Award. Four composers have been nominated this year for this coveted prize and their music can be heard during various concerts. In this concert, Asko|Schönberg, the leading Dutch ensemble for new music, will be playing brand-new music by Award-nominated Gen Tanaka and Annika Socolofsky.

Vamachara, the title of Gen Tanaka’s new work, is a Sanskrit word meaning to achieve spiritual awakening in a clandestine, unconventional way. The choice of title is characteristic of a composer who is constantly trying to transcend the everyday world in his music. On the other hand, the boundaries that Annika Socolofsky tries to challenge in her music are those of restrictive gender roles. Her piece Who Am I to Say? rebels against the nursery rhymes that teach girls from an early age to accept a subordinate role. There will also be new work by Saed Haddad, the Jordanian-German composer who was involved as a jury member in the selection of the four Award nominees – with harmonica player Hermine Deurloo, who is particularly popular in the jazz world, playing a starring role.

Bach Partita #2 in d, Jan van de Putte "Sans Pause". Jan's piece was written for me some time ago, but because of the lockdown, we were unable to give a premiere until earlier this summer. This concert is actually the first public premiere of the piece. It really asks everything of the performer in terms of color, dynamic range (the loudest - and softest! that's possible), and also the range on the instrument - towards the end, he writes some of the highest notes I've seen. I am looking forward to it!... See MoreSee Less

Of course everything will be properly distanced 🙂 The people at Ammophila have done a great job to measure everything and ensure maximum safety!

The program was inspired by my experience during lockdown and will be:

Bach - Partita #2 in d minor
Pauline Oliveros - From Unknown Silences
Kaija Saariaho - Nocturne
Andrew Norman - Sabina

Over the past months, I reflected a lot on what we have and what we have lost as musicians. I chose these pieces because I feel they represent some of the most essential things in music.

Pauline Oliveros's piece is especially exciting for me - it can only be experienced live, and is a kind of group meditation on what it means to experience sound together.

This concert will be outdoors in the garden of the Kunstenaarshuis Ammophila. In case of rain, the "backup date" is 24 hours later, 19 July at 16u.

Programma:
Lam Lai - The Dancing Percussionist
Jobina Tinnemans - Fell

Marie Guilleray - Estrun

Come to our concert and take refuge from this horrible weather! Same program as last weekend in Heiloo: Beethoven, Webern, Schumann, Stravinsky. The link below will give you more information about the concert and the lovely church where we will be playing (it's worth it to come just for the church alone!)
